The Story

In 1978, Vince Skandunas began manufacturing fuel tanks for the desert racing industry. When he was aproached by a marine vessel owner to replace the tanks in his ship, he accepted the job with confidence. With successful delivery of the first tank, word of mouth spread, and several other owners were soon asking for replacement tanks. With each successive tank he delivered his reputation as a skilled tradesmen grew. In a short period Vince's solid work ethic and flawless delivery of replacement tanks earned him a steady stream of new customers, and American Tanks was born.

Over the next 20 years, the business grew and found a home in La Mesa on Commercial St. In 1998, Vince Skandunas Jr. joined the team at the shop. Vince and Vince Jr. worked side by side and continued producing custom marine tanks while growing and expanding with other custom tank jobs and small scale manufacturing projects. As the shop reputation continued to grow, American Tanks was awarded several civilian and military contracts for tank pressure systems, small vessel boarding ladders, turbine engine support stands, and other weldment based projects.

With the on-budget and on schedule delivery of each of these projects, both the capability and know-how in the shop grew. As larger and larger contracts were awarded, Vince's second son Brian came aboard as well, and American Tanks established itself firmly as a premier weldment production facility in liquid and gas tanks, and small to medium production project welding.

Today American Tanks continues to serve the Marine Tank market as a family owned and operated business and gladly invites you to inquire about replacement Marine Tanks, custom liquid or air tanks, or other custom production welding jobs.
